Dry Cleaning

It is said that your clothes tells a lot about your personality. The method of washing clothes without using water is called Dry Cleaning.  Dry Cleaning is a method in which liquid solvents are used instead of water. In olden days kerosene and gasoline was used whereas today perchloroethane (known as perc) is used. Ordinary washing cannot remove many kinds of stains, whereas the solvents used in dry cleaning dissolve grease holding dirt and stains from the cloth. Dry cleaning does not shrink clothes or make colors run. Dry Cleaning is not a hot cleaning process and so it does not damage fragile and heat-sensitive fabrics.

There are many steps during the dry cleaning process in which PERC and other solvents have the probability to become airborne. Filtration and decontamination are the main methods used to recover solvents.

  1. Have you ever wondered why dry cleaning is called 'dry cleaning' when your garments get wet after they are submerged in a liquid solvent? It is because they go in dry and come out dry. The term 'dry cleaning' is a little misleading for this cleaning process.
